Anti-freeze Toxicity

It’s a problem we all know too well.  It would be wrong for us to not remind everyone to be careful as they prepare their vehicles for winter to not allow any anti-freeze to pool on the ground or sit in a low bucket for their pet to drink.  Even though there has been a great deal of pressure to simply add a bitter-tasting substance to anti-freeze, it hasn’t happened yet.  If you suspect your pet has ingested anti-freeze, don’t wait even an hour to decide if you need to contact your veterinarian.  Anti-freeze toxicity is almost always lethal if proper therapy isn’t initiated immediately.  Don’t wait over night or until Monday to get your pet treated.  It takes a few days for the damage to make the pet sick but the injury to the kidneys begins within minutes of ingestion and is irreversible once it occurs.
